CUSTOM FRAMING FAQS
Custom framing is a specialized service offered by The Middle House Gallery & Framing, both in-store and referenced here, designed to create personalized, high-quality frames tailored to enhance and protect artwork, photographs, heirlooms, or other cherished items. Unlike pre-made frames, custom framing allows for complete customization in size, style, materials, and design to perfectly complement the piece and the customer’s aesthetic preferences.
HOW IT WORKS
Consultation: The process begins with a consultation usually in the store. You present the item to be framed—such as an oil painting, watercolor, cross-stitch, photograph, or shadow box item. Kitty or Kathryn will discuss your vision, preferences, and the item’s specific needs (e.g., preservation, display environment, or style).
Selection of Materials:
-
Mouldings: Choose from hundreds of frame mouldings, ranging from classic wood finishes to ornate or modern minimalist designs. These vary in color, texture, width, and style to match the artwork and your decor.
-
Mats: Mats (optional) are selected to add a border around the artwork, enhancing its presentation and protecting it from touching the glass. Mats come in various colors, textures, and cuts (e.g., single, double, or beveled).
-
Glazing: Select the glass or acrylic cover, such as UV-protective glass to prevent fading, non-reflective glass for better visibility, or museum-grade options for maximum preservation.
-
Backing and Mounting: The item is securely mounted using archival materials to ensure longevity, with acid-free backing to prevent deterioration.
Design Customization: The framer collaborates with you to balance aesthetics and functionality. For example, a vibrant oil painting might pair with a bold, wide moulding, while a delicate watercolor could be enhanced with a subtle mat and slim frame. The design is tailored to the item’s size, style, and intended display space.
Crafting the Frame: Once selections are finalized, Alan will cut and assemble the frame, mat, and glazing to precise specifications. The item is carefully fitted into the frame, ensuring it is secure and properly aligned. This process may take a few days to weeks, depending on complexity and materials.
Quality Check: The finished piece undergoes a quality inspection to ensure flawless craftsmanship. In-store, you pick up the framed item.
